Hospice - The wheels on the bus.
The team at Rebecca House were absolutely delighted to receive a specifically adapted Renault Trafic van kindly donated by Lady Joan Smith recently.
Lady Smith has been involved with Hospice Isle of Man for a number of years, indeed a wing at the new Hospice is called after her late husband, Professor Sir Roland Smith, who was a former Chairman of his beloved Manchester United Football Club - which is why the van is red!
The van has been specifically adapted to accommodate up to 8 children from Rebecca House, whether seated or in their bolted-in wheelchairs. Access to the van
is available by lift hoist. The van has also modified to carry oxygen cylinders should it be required.
Frances Bland, team leader of Rebecca House said: "Having this van will make such a difference to our families and will be used for a variety of events. Historically we have had to turn down invitations to various functions due to transport restrictions, but with this van, our staff, the children and their families will be able get out and about as a group. This van will be of huge importance and significance to everyone involved in Rebecca House."
Margaret Simpson, Chief Executive of Hospice Isle of Man continued: "I would like to thank Lady Smith for her continued and generous support. Without her help it would not have been possible to purchase this specifically designed vehicle."
David Quayle of Athol Garage said: "We have been working with Hospice Isle of Man for a while now in order to ensure the right type of transport was delivered to meet their specific needs and we are pleased to be able today to finally handover the keys."
